AI implementation

From an AI demo to a useful business pilot

A demo can start a conversation. A pilot should answer a business question under conditions that are relevant to the team doing the work.

Name what you want to learn.

Before a pilot, write one or two questions the business needs answered. Can the workflow collect useful information? Does the handoff help the receiving team? Is the result understandable without extra explanation?

This turns general enthusiasm into a reviewable objective. Avoid adding every possible use case to the first trial. A limited scope makes it easier to understand why a result worked and where it needs adjustment.

Bring realistic situations.

Use scenarios that reflect the work, including incomplete information and exceptions. Ask the people responsible for the current process to help choose them. Their involvement can reveal assumptions that a polished demonstration does not address.

Decide in advance how the result will be reviewed. Look at the whole route from the first interaction to the final handoff, and record any rework required. Keep illustrative test scenarios distinct from actual customer outcomes.

Make the next decision explicit.

At the end of the pilot, the team should be able to decide whether to continue, revise the scope, or stop. Document what was learned and what remains uncertain.

My perspective comes from approaching AI as a business owner. I want to understand what the technology will do inside the operating process, what the team must provide, and who remains responsible when the process needs a person.

TAKE IT INTO THE BUSINESS

A practical check.

  • Define the questions the pilot must answer.
  • Test realistic and unexpected situations.
  • Review the receiving team’s experience.
  • Agree on a continue, revise, or stop decision.
